Anthony B Hits The Red Carpet Of The American Music Awards

Reggae recording artiste Anthony B is looking forward to returning to Jamaica today after attending the American Music Awards (AMAs) in the United States on the weekend.

"The experience was one in a million, words cannot describe it, a great experience. It makes you realise the possibilities that lie ahead for reggae music if we can take it seriously and structure our music like a real industry," Anthony B told the Observer. "I was able to get good exposure for my Rise Up album, I hung out a little backstage with Rihanna, Judge Matthias, Reba McIntyre and that was great fun."

The artiste says appearing on the red carpet at the AMAs was a major opportunity to expand the fan base of his particular brand of soul-searing, inspirational reggae music. Anthony B, known for songs such as Fire Pon Rome, was interviewed by ABC entertainment reporters as well as reporters from entertainment and music affiliates of numerous television and radio stations worldwide who had descended on the awards show for that reason. The AMAs were broadcast live on major US network ABC, and seen by millions of people worldwide.

Anthony has just release a brand new music video for this new single “You Hold Me” single.

Jamaica Hosts Hennessy artistry

The most sophisticated, chic event of the year, Hennessy artistry slated for Saturday November 21 at the Cable and Wireless Golf Academy is a coup for J. Wray and Nephew Limited, distributors of the Hennessy Cognac line. The Hennessy artistry event has received the thumbs up from Moet-Hennessy, the international producer of Hennessy, which selected Jamaica of all the distributing Caribbean islands to host this unique party experience.

Debbian Spence, Brand Manager at J. Wray and Nephew Limited, is excited about the event and the recognition of the value of Hennessy to the Jamaican entertainment scene. In her recent presentation at the event launch on Friday November 13, she advised that the Hennessy brand is supported by Jamaicans and has been doing well in the spirits market locally. In support of the brand presence in the market and this new platform Pascal Bony of Moet-Hennessy will lead a delegation to Jamaica to experience Hennessy Kingston cocktails at the Hennessy artistry event in Jamaica.

Hennessy artistry is intertwined with the suave smooth elements of the Hennessy Cognac brand which is, as expected, a feature of the event. Having established five city cocktails with a Hennessy base named after great cities, Paris, Moscow, Miami, Shanghai and London, the brand now seeks to locate the right mix that encapsulates the essence of the enigma that is Kingston, Jamaica.

The party is slated to be a dancehall affair with dancehall fashionista Lena British along with Chris Hardy hosting guests on one of dancehall’s hottest black carpets. The event also features a multi level dance floor with Zj Liquid, DJ Shine and the Immortal Stone Love on the wheels of steel promising a great party vibe. Patrons will also be treated to performances from Dancehall favourites, Bounty Killa, Beenie Man, Lady Saw, Elephant Man, Mavado and Queen Ifrica.

Andrew Price, Marketing Manager of J. Wray and Nephew Limited confirmed that Hennessy has been adopted by Jamaican’s as the Cognac of choice. He indicated that Hennessy artistry is a platform that enables a fusion of cultural elements toward total satisfaction.

It is a unique global endeavour that encapsulates a huge variety of musical talents on one stage whilst giving patrons a chance to discover Hennessey Cognac through the art of mixing. The concept has been staged in cities such as Berlin, Santa Domingo, and cities all across the United States.

Hennessy artistry takes place on Saturday November 21 at the Cable and Wireless Golf Club. Tickets are $2200 presold and $2500 at the gate. Hennessy encourages a safe party environment and as such encourages patrons to drink responsibly. The event is rated 18 years and over and will see a strict No Weapons policy being enforced.

Dancehall Artiste Lisa Hype Response to XXX-rate Photos

Twitter, Facebook and mobile phones were abuzz last night, as a photo Lisa Hype circulated rapidly throughout the night. The photo shows Lisa apparently performing fellatio on an unidentified man who presumably took the picture with his camera phone.

Partyxtraz magazine has refrain from posting the photos due it pornographic nature but wiithin hours, sites had posted up the picture. It can still be viewed online http://jamaicangroupiemet.blogspot.com/2009/11/mout-ova-full-pan-dat-crooked-cockey.html

In response Lisa Hype has issued the following press release;

"First, I would like to say that there is no excuse for a picture of that nature to be a part of the public domain. I admit that the picture is real, but it captures a personal act done in the privacy of my bedroom. I don't know how that got leaked to the media and condemn anyone who would stoop to such a low. However, I understand that I am a public person, and when I say or do something, either articulated and thought out, it carries weight in the public arena. As a result, I must assume personal responsibility for my actions. I would like to apologise specifically to all my female fans who might be disappointed to see me in this light. However, I don't apologise for the act itself because it was done with a man that I truly and deeply love and respect, and it was done in the privacy of my bedroom. I did it, so what?

I would also like to apologise to my family who are truly and deeply hurt by the dissemination of the photo all over the Internet and the media. This is not cool. And this is not funny. This is my life that some unscrupulous person is attempting to destroy, but I am a strong young woman and I will survive. Many young women, like myself, have been exploited and hurt in this way and there comes a point in everyone's life when they have to stop allowing people to hurt them. I am begging young girls across Jamaica to use my life as an example: we live in a male-dominated society but don't allow men to use and abuse you. I have learned my lesson the hard way. The world is a tough classroom, sometimes.

In closing, I want to say thank you to all my young fans who have supported me in this, my darkest hour."

Gaza-Gully Issue, The White Elephant In The Room....

The Gaza-Gully has become such a great social concern that Marketing and Product Development expert Tara Playfair-Scott has made an entry on her blog http://taraplayfair.blogspot.com about the issuse.

I read this letter to the Editor today in The Jamaica Gleaner & felt I needed to share it in my blog.....it does indeed capture what is happening in front of our very eyes - our own state of crisis is like the white elephant in the room:

LETTER OF THE DAY - Hypocrisy and distractions Published: Monday November 16, 2009

The Editor, Sir:

I have resisted commenting on the whole Gaza-Gully issue, but after reading The Gleaner on Saturday and seeing an open letter from Howard Hamilton, QC, I really saw red.

I was reminded that some years ago, around the spring of 1988, there were many stories making the rounds about 'Shirley's duppy'. Many people were caught up with this duppy nonsense. Artistes were doing songs about Shirley's duppy and the newspapers were running stories every day about the duppy. There were stories about where she came from and to whom she was speaking and against whom she came to seek vengeance.

I also remember a Rastaman saying to me after hearing some people talking about the duppy: "Mek dem idiots gwan talk bout duppy while politician a run di place in the ground." I asked him what he meant and he explained that whenever a government was messing up, they would seek to distract the people from its failings and the real issues at hand.

Beenie Man Cut from Concert Lineups in Australia and New Zealand

Internet reports say that New Zealand MP Kevin Hague was among those objecting to the inclusion of the King of the Dancehall based on his anti-gay lyrics. Hague noted that hate-mongering is not welcome in New Zealand, and reportedly urged the Big Day Out to uninvite Beenie.

"Music is a powerful shaper of culture, values, attitudes and behaviour," said Hague. "Music that denigrates gay men and lesbians in the most extreme way imaginable sends some very powerful signals both to young gay and lesbian people but also to their peers. It is not true that 'sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me'.

"Hate speech like that of Beenie Man gives permission to prejudice and discrimination and creates it where it didn't previously exist. It blights and diminishes the lives of all who are exposed to it, most particularly young lesbian and gay people who suffer violence, harassment, lowered self-esteem and all the consequent health and social problems."

Gay rights groups had petitioned festival organisers to drop him from the line-up, saying his songs incited violence.

Lyrics include "I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays", while another song suggests lesbians should be hanged.

The promoters had said in a previous release that they were aware of Beenie Man's controversial past, but he had renounced those feelings and was now promoting "peaceful and humanistic values".

However, a release posted yesterday said, "The depth of feeling and hurt amongst these groups has convinced us that for us to proceed with his Big Day Out appearances was, and would continue to be, divisive among our audience members and would mar the enjoyment of the event for many."

Beenie Man, as is the norm, could not be reached for comment.

A statement from Big Day Out confirmed his appearances had been cancelled because they would "mar" the event for many.

It said: "Although aware of the controversial nature of Beenie Man and his previous lyrics that have caused offence with the gay and lesbian and wider community, the producers understood that the artist had renounced these sentiments and no longer expresses those views.

"Notwithstanding claims of a commitment to the Reggae Compassionate Act which he signed in 2007 and a promise of adherence to peaceful and humanistic values for the dates here by Beenie Man, the depth of feeling and hurt amongst these groups has convinced us that for us to proceed with his Big Day Out appearances was, and would continue to be, divisive amongst our audience members and would mar the enjoyment of the event for many.

"For this reason we have decided not to proceed."

According to gay UK group OutRage!, Beenie Man later denied signing the act and denounced it.

Peter Tatchell, who had written to festival organisers to urge them to drop him, said: "These concert cancellations will hit Beenie Man hard in the pocket. He has lost tens of thousands of dollars.

"The success of this campaign sends a warning message to all murder music artists: inciting homophobic violence will cost you money. You will lose out big time."
